Tasting Notes

The Charm of Field Blends: A Timeless Approach to Winemaking In today’s world of winemaking, most blended wines are created using a method where grapes from specific varieties are grown in separate vineyards, harvested, and fermented independently. The grapes are then carefully blended to create a harmonious final wine. This process is the backbone of popular blends, from Bordeaux to many modern cuvées. But there's an older, lesser-known winemaking tradition that’s been quietly making a comeback: the field blend. What is a Field Blend? Field blends are a fascinating and ancient approach to winemaking. Unlike the varietal-specific methods of today, field blends involve growing different types of grapes in the same vineyard or even the same row of vines. These grapes are harvested together, fermented together, and made into a single wine. The practice was once the standard for many vineyards, but it has largely faded into the background as more modern, precise techniques took hold. Today, however, field blends are still being crafted in certain wine regions, and their unique charm continues to intrigue wine lovers. After fermentation, the wines are left on the skins for an extended maceration to ensure full extraction of flavor and soft tannins from the skins before pressing and being transferred to oak. This mix of techniques allows the maximum expression of fruit, spice, and lees aromas to produce an intense wine displaying the best qualities of these grapes and vineyards. This wine was aged in oak barrels, 35% new, a mixture of French and American oak, for 20 months, to balance and elevate the wines. The wine was aged on the yeast lees and stirred (batonage) monthly to extract a rich mouthfeel.
